Strike 18
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 5.5 m (18 ft) trimaran by Richard Woods of Woods Designs, also sold by Bateau. The idea is to build only the plywood dory-shaped main hull and borrow the outriggers and rig from a used 16 ft beach catamaran; if no donor can be found, Woods's Quattro 16 can be built for the purpose. A removable cabin top turns a day sailer that seats six into a pocket cruiser sleeping two. Overall beam is 4.3 m.
The designer calls the main hull extremely easy to build and reports that his prototype took about 150 hours before final painting. Allow more for paint, beams and adapting the donor cat: budget 200 to 400 hours. Plans are sold for the hull alone or complete. Real hours from logged builds are below.
