Lotsbåt Skum no. 33

Designed by Bertil Andersson

Skum is a Kalmarsund pilot boat, one of the last two built by Per Nilsson, known as Pelle Fräsare, in Kalmar in 1914. Pilots on the twelve stations of the sound had to supply their own boats, and the type began when a sailor called Krus-Nisse saw a handsome boat in West Hartlepool and built the first copy on Ängö in 1886.

Pelle Fräsare took the design up and built many; this one was ordered by pilot Lindhe and later renamed Skum. She was measured in 1981, when her owner at Bergkvara was sailing and racing her, and she turned 100 in 2014. She is oak, 6.19 m by 1.80 m, drawn on four 1:10 sheets plus a 1:20 sail plan. Pilot boats carried a red cloth in the sail so ships could spot them, and a glassfibre version was built in the 1980s.
