Birder Decked Canoe
Designed by Graham Byrnes
A 13 ft decked canoe by Graham Byrnes of B&B Yacht Designs, 26 in wide and about 33 lb, meant for quiet paddling with binoculars and lunch kept dry and close to hand. It takes one adult, or an adult and a child, with a single or double paddle. A 15 ft 8 in tandem, the Birder 2, is 28 in wide, weighs about 45 lb and carries two adults plus gear. Plans are sold for both.
B&B groups its canoes and kayaks as good first projects. The hull combines folded plywood ends with stitch and glue chines, and panel dimensions are given in the plans rather than full-size templates. Budget 70 to 130 hours as a rule of thumb. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Birder Decked Canoe actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
