13' Lapstrake Canoe

A 13 ft lapstrake canoe drawn by Walt Simmons of Duck Trap Woodworking in Lincolnville, Maine, the shortest of three sister designs. She is paddled with a jointed double paddle and finishes at about 45 lb. The planking can be traditional quarter-inch cedar over steam-bent white ash ribs, or 6 mm okoume plywood with epoxied laps and no ribs. The designer notes that seating close to the keel gives her steadier manners than a canvas canoe.
Simmons calls these canoes the easiest of all lapstrake boats and a sensible first one, since the light scantlings need few clamps or special tools. A full-size body plan removes the mould layout work. Budget 150 to 300 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
