37 ft Tug Yacht
Designed by Jay R. Benford
A 37 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for steel chine construction. Benford spent 1966 to 1968 as staff naval architect at Foss Launch and Tug in Seattle, which ran well over a hundred tugs at the time, so the tug designs come out of real towing practice rather than out of a styling exercise. The tug yachts carry modest power for economical cruising and far more accommodation than a working boat would have, and most can still be powered to do useful work.
Benford publishes a displacement of 25,300/28,600 lb in coastal cruising trim, which is tanks full with the crew and their stores aboard rather than a shipping weight. Plans are sold to owner-builders, and full-sized patterns come with them and study plans are sold separately for anyone wanting to look before committing.
What building a 37 ft Tug Yacht actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
