Cruising Sloop
Designed by Paul Butler
A Frank Davis design, this compact V bottomed centerboard sloop measures 18 ft 1 in overall with a 6 ft 10 in beam. It draws 9 in with the board up, so it can reach shallows larger boats cannot, while the centerboard drops almost 4 ft for open water and the rig carries 160 sq ft of sail. With the board up and the pivoting rudder raised it sits level when grounded.
The hard chine sheet ply hull is about as simple as a boat of this ability gets and can be reinforced with epoxy and glass as needed. A wooden mast is drawn, though an aluminum section can be substituted. It works as a quick day sailer or a small overnighter that still fits in a garage. The plans are four large detailed sheets.
What building a Cruising Sloop actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
