Lion 550
Designed by Unik Yachts
Lion 550 Adrenaline is a light 5.5 m trailer sailer with a beam of 2.5 m, built from waterproof plywood sheathed in fibreglass. Unik Yachts designed it as one big three dimensional puzzle: around sixty parts, each locating in slots on its neighbours, so that the builder is assembling rather than measuring and the build time comes down sharply.
The designer's figures give a lifting keel drawing 0.25 m up and 1.5 m down, 250 kg of ballast, 22 square metres of sail and room for four. The company has followed builders through the process, posting in 2024 that another 550 started the previous October was in fitting out, and it describes the boat as one that can be finished in a home garage, with the children helping.
What building a Lion 550 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
