Duck Boat
Designed by Paul Butler
Known variously as a scullboat, sneakboat, poke boat or layout boat, this 11 ft 10 in by 3 ft hull is a light update of an old market hunter's design. The prototype was built for a retired Air Force colonel in his late seventies who brought in a magazine clipping of the original, which had been cypress plank on frame and close to 200 lb. The design was later published in Outdoor Life.
Butler's version is hardwood plywood and epoxy and can weigh as little as 50 lb, with a graphite bottom for dragging it like a sled. A bulkhead cutout lets two adults use it in sheltered water, though it suits one hunter with a dog or a load of decoys best. The 35 page plans discuss open and part decked layouts and material options.
What building a Duck Boat actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
