Sassafras 16 Canoe
Designed by Chesapeake Light Craft
A 15 ft 7 in tandem lapstrake canoe from Chesapeake Light Craft, introduced in the late 1990s and reworked as the Mark II, released in 2014 after dozens were built at WoodenBoat Show family boatbuilding events. The 6 mm okoume hull goes together by CLC's LapStitch stitch-and-glue method, with fiberglass on the lower strakes and flotation compartments at each end. It weighs about 68 lb, carries 500 lb, is symmetrical so a solo paddler can sit reversed, and accepts a rowing rig. Kits and plans are sold.
No mold, lofting or spiling is needed, and CLC rates it a beginner project at an estimated 90 hours. Budget 80 to 120. Measured medians from build logs appear below.

Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
