Cottage Cruiser
Designed by Steve Killing
Ron Frenette of Canadian Canoes, north of Toronto, started this project in 1997. He liked traditional canoes but wanted a mid-sized hull with more capacity than the usual 15 footers, and Steve Killing drew the Cottage Cruiser for him; it is one of the designs Killing lists as his own originals in the Bear Mountain range. She is 15 ft 6 1/2 in long with a 35 in maximum beam, 20 in bow height and an expected finished weight of 45 to 55 pounds.
The lines owe a lot to the Prospector family, with more tumblehome in the sides and a flatter sheer. Despite the name, Bear Mountain describes her as equally at home around the dock, on portages or on a two week trip. They also say she planks up very cleanly, which makes her a good choice for a builder who wants a traditional looking cedar strip canoe that comes out looking professionally built.
What building a Cottage Cruiser actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
