Chesapeake 16LT

Designed by Chesapeake Light Craft

A 15 ft 6.5 in light-touring kayak from Chesapeake Light Craft: the Chesapeake 16 hull with lower sides and deck, which cuts volume by about 20 percent and reduces windage. It is 23 in wide and about 42 lb, for paddlers of 100 to 160 lb with shoes to size 10, and carries 220 lb. Construction is stitch-and-glue in 4 mm okoume with fiberglass sheathing. Kits and plans are available.

CLC calls it a beginner project, documented for people using epoxy and fiberglass for the first time. CLC's estimate is 80 hours, of which 40 to 50 go into the hull and about 30 into finishing. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
