Shearwater Double
Designed by Eric Schade
An 18 ft 6 in tandem sea kayak designed by Eric Schade for Chesapeake Light Craft, meant to give the speed of a long double in a more compact boat. The stitch-and-glue hull is multi-chined and plumb-ended for a long waterline, 27 in wide and about 68 lb, with two large cockpits, three storage compartments with flush hatches, and a 575 lb payload. The hull is okoume with a sapele deck, glassed inside and out. Kits and plans are sold.
CLC rates it a beginner project with pre-drilled stitch holes, and estimates 110 hours; one builder quoted on the page logged 153. Budget 110 to 160. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
What building a Shearwater Double actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
