Mallard 13
Designed by Sam Devlin
A 12 ft 11 in sneakbox-type duck boat by Sam Devlin, built stitch and glue in marine plywood sheathed with epoxy and fiberglass. It is one of his oldest designs and, by his account, the best of his sneakboxes under oars, also poling well and taking an outboard up to 15 hp for about 15 mph at medium load. Beam is 4 ft 10 in, draft 5 in, weight 155 lb and maximum load 580 lb. Three-point foam flotation keeps it level and upright if swamped.
Study and construction plans are sold. A small decked hull like this is a reasonable first stitch and glue build. As a rule of thumb, budget 100 to 200 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Mallard 13 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
