Dory Skiff
Designed by Walt Simmons
A 9 ft round-sided skiff sold by Walt Simmons's Duck Trap Woodworking in Maine. The plans page tells her story: the lines began as an unpublished L. Francis Herreshoff drawing made as a gift for his college roommate, who redrew the boat from memory some fifty years later and had Duck Trap build her. She serves as a small rowing tender. Plans run to two sheets of lines, offsets and construction, with scale plank patterns as a bonus.
Round sides mean real lapstrake planking in place of flat panels, so she asks more than the flat-bottomed Maine Skiff, though the plank patterns help. Some woodworking experience is useful. Budget 150 to 300 hours as a rule of thumb. The medians below are from builders who logged this boat here.
What building a Dory Skiff actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
