Newfoundland Trap Skiff

The largest of Walt Simmons's wherries at a little under 20 ft, with lines taken from an original builder's half model. Duck Trap Woodworking has built five. She carries a balanced ketch rig, with a sloop plan also supplied, and owners have made long coastal passages in her, including Long Island to Penobscot Bay and the Inside Passage to Alaska.
The designer says her size and high, deep tuck make her harder to build than the Christmas Wherry, though she goes together like any traditional lapstrake boat and has been finished by determined home builders, some on their first boat with the photo book. Expect 900 to 1,500 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
