Ankon 38
Designed by Dudley Dix
An 11.5 m (37 ft 9 in) round bilge steel cruising cutter by Dudley Dix, commissioned by the Cape Town steel yard Ankon. It displaces 10,850 kg with 3,500 kg of lead ballast, draws a moderate 1.6 m, and sleeps six in three private cabins. The hull is longitudinally framed over widely spaced transverse frames, with slack curves to ease plating, and the deck can be plywood or steel.
Round bilge steel asks for welding ability and patience in shaping plate, so it suits an experienced amateur or a small yard. Dix gives no build time; as a rule of thumb expect 5,000 to 8,000 hours. The Ankon 40 is the same hull with an extended stern. Real hours from logged builds are below.
