Didi 38/40
Designed by Dudley Dix
An 11.5 m (37 ft 9 in) radius chine plywood cruiser racer by Dudley Dix, also drawn with a stern extended by 0.57 m as the 12.07 m Didi 40. Dix was his own client: he built the prototype, Black Cat, in his garden, launched her in 1995 and has crossed the South Atlantic three times aboard, logging close to 250 miles in a day. Displacement is 4,750 kg with 717 sq ft of sail, and draft options run from 1.6 to 2.25 m.
The boat was conceived to be quick for one or two people to build on a tight budget, and builders' notes and bulkhead kits support amateurs. Expect 5,000 to 7,000 hours as a rule of thumb. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Didi 38/40 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
