Cape Charles 32
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 9.57 m (31 ft 5 in) on deck classic cutter by Dudley Dix, the raised-sheer flush deck member of the lapstrake plywood range that grew from the Cape Cutter 19. A fixed keel draws only 1.2 m for the Chesapeake, Bahamas and Caribbean, yet Dix rates it for ocean crossings. Displacement is 5,200 kg with 1,750 kg of ballast, the interior is borrowed from his Didi 950, and gaff or Marconi rigs of about 700 sq ft are drawn.
Bulkheads, backbone and engine beds slot together egg-crate fashion, and Dix says a handyman of reasonable ability can manage it. Bulkhead patterns come with the plans and CNC kits are planned. Expect 4,000 to 5,500 hours as a rule of thumb. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
