Piepowder 16
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 16 ft 7 in (5.05 m) on deck vest-pocket ocean cruiser by Dudley Dix, commissioned by a young sailor who wanted to reach faraway places in a minimum boat. It is designed for Airex foam cored fiberglass with buoyancy foam throughout, so that even holed and fully laden it sinks only about 300 mm below its marks. With 350 kg of bolt-on lead it is self-righting, with positive stability to 150 degrees. The rig is a small cutter of 151 sq ft, and below are two quarter berths and a double.
The designer describes it as a very basic boat with few drawings. A one-off cored hull asks for some laminating experience. Budget 1,000 to 1,800 hours as a rule of thumb. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Piepowder 16 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
