Welsford sailed an 18 ft gaff centreboarder around the Hauraki Gulf as a teenager, and Pilgrim came out of wanting to go back forty years later in a boat of similar character. The intended trip, Tauranga to the Bay of Islands and back over his old ground, is about 300 miles, and the northward leg in summer means working to windward in open sea against the prevailing north-easterlies with a mountainous forested lee shore close under the bow. That requirement, rather than nostalgia, is what shaped her.
A 16 ft 5 in family daysailer and adventure cruiser with 210 kg of ballast in a 480 kg boat, which makes her stiff enough to carry 162 sq ft on a 7 ft beam. Draws 1 ft 7 in with the board up, so she takes the ground upright and floats off again.
