Bebop
Designed by Grandpa's Archive
Bebop is a scaled-down runabout for children, 8 ft long and 48 in wide, drawn by naval architect William D. Jackson as Craft Print Project No. 276. It has a single cockpit with a steering wheel, a small plastic windshield and flared topsides, and is meant for a 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 hp outboard and a top speed of about 10 mph on protected water, with three children aboard.
The hull is 1/4 in fir exterior plywood over a sawn wooden frame with plywood gussets, and the bottom is fiberglassed. Jackson avoided steam bending and awkward joinery so that everything could come from a lumber yard; the article priced the materials at $35 and the finished boat at about 100 lb. Full-size frame drawings are laid out on building paper.
What building a Bebop actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
