Unsinkable Dinghy
Designed by Grandpa's Archive
Can't Sink is a 9 1/2 ft fishing dinghy with a 47 in beam, 85 lb and room for three adults. Its selling point is the air chambers built into each seat, about 3000 cu in in total, and the article shows a man sitting in the swamped hull to prove it stays up.
Construction is unusual for its day: a wooden framework of fir strips encased in fiberglass inside and out, with a layer of glass mat bonded with polyester resin, so the color runs right through and there is nothing to paint. Stem and transom are 3/4 in exterior plywood, and two mold frames set up on a 2 x 10 form. The scan is free from the archive.
What building a Unsinkable Dinghy actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
