Guppy 9
Designed by Sam Devlin
A 9 ft 1 in stitch and glue dinghy by Sam Devlin that rows, sails or takes a 2 hp outboard. It is a cousin of his Polliwog, 19 in longer. Beam is 4 ft 4 in, dry weight 80 lb, useful load 585 lb and sail area 54 sq ft, with a board that draws 32 in when down. Devlin reports carrying three adults and gear.
The designer says it was drawn to be built quickly by amateurs with a minimum of tools and experience, so it suits a first boat. Study and construction plans are available. As a rule of thumb, budget 40 to 80 hours, more for the sailing rig. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
What building a Guppy 9 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
