Wayfarer
Designed by Ian Proctor
The Wayfarer is a 15 ft 10 in sailing dinghy designed by Ian Proctor in 1957, roomy and stable enough for family day sailing and well known for long coastal cruises in open water, and still raced in fleets in Britain, Canada, the United States and Scandinavia. She carries a main and jib of about 125 sq ft between them, with a spinnaker for racing, and takes a crew of two or more.
The early boats were built in marine plywood and many of those wooden Wayfarers are still sailing, so a good share of the work on them today is restoration: new decks, tanks and transoms on boats sixty years old. Later hulls are fiberglass. She is about 6 ft 1 in in beam and around 370 lb. The UK Wayfarer Association keeps the class rules and advice for owners restoring a wooden boat.
What building a Wayfarer actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
