Adelie 16
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 16 ft mini cruiser by Jacques Mertens of Bateau, the stretched sister of the Adelie 14, drawn for coastal cruising and the occasional short offshore hop. The extra length buys more room below and 100 lb more ballast, while the 114 sq ft sail plan and the 6 ft 5 in beam stay the same. Trailer weight is about 640 lb and draft is 13 in with the centerboard keel raised.
Built like the 14: plywood panels stitched in a basket mold and sandwiched in fiberglass and epoxy, or foam sandwich as an option. A small boat first is the designer's advice. The designer's figure is about 100 hours to assemble the hull and 100 to 200 more to finish. Real hours from logged builds are below.
