Tender Behind

The phone call was from Welsford's old maths teacher, who twenty-five years earlier had promised him a tender behind for flicking rubber bands in class, and was now asking for one of a different kind. The brief was to carry him and his wife plus gear and sometimes two others, go up on deck, be light enough to lift there, be easy for an amateur to build, and serve as the yacht's lifeboat since she carried no liferaft. Severe arthritis meant she also had to be unusually stable for her size. She has since become one of his more popular small boats.
A 7 ft 3 in yacht tender drawn to be seaworthy rather than merely small: 4 ft of beam, 32 kg, and capacity for four or five adults in suitable conditions. Takes an outboard up to 5 hp.
