Athey
Designed by Dave Kuperstein
Athey is a 15 ft cut down Athelas, first built by Dave Kuperstein for an Oregon client who wanted something lighter and named his boat Hoja, Spanish for leaf. Every overall dimension except length is the same, but the plank layout shifts slightly, she needs five frames instead of three, and the three middle planks drop to 4 mm plywood. Rigged for a single rower she came out at 65 pounds, which makes car topping easier, though the thinner planks are easier to damage.
She draws about 3 1/2 in with one rower and around 6 in with three aboard, and either boat will carry two or three adults. Kuperstein notes she is a little tippy if someone stands up alone in her but stable enough seated in open water. The shorter hull costs some speed: above about 5 mph her drag rises faster than the Athelas's. Construction is the same glued lapstrake plywood, and the plans cost the same as for her longer sister.
What building a Athey actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
