Raju 500
Designed by Cristian Pilo
A 5.0 m single sea-touring kayak by Cristian Pilo of Modern Wooden Boat, the more technical boat in his stitch and glue family for intermediate to expert paddlers. The hull is narrower and lower than the Bette, with less drag and a smaller cockpit. It comes in a standard version with a 58 cm beam and a narrow 54 cm version for experienced paddlers. Weight is about 19 kg, paddler range 55 to 80 kg, recommended maximum load 130 kg.
Built the same way as the rest of the family from 4 mm okoume plywood, wire stitches, thickened epoxy and glass tape. Cristian Pilo rates the family for builders with basic woodworking experience and quotes 60 to 85 hours depending on skill. Real hours from logged builds are below.
