16' 6" Shooting Star
Designed by Rob Macks
A 16 ft 6 in strip-built baidarka by Rob Macks of Laughing Loon, with kits from Newfound Woodworks. It is 21 in wide, about 35 lb, and meant for paddlers of 100 to 200 lb. It is a separate lower-volume hull and not a scaled North Star, slightly flattened for stability, with the Aleut-style split bow. It was the subject of a two-part WoodenBoat article by the designer in 2015.
The bifurcated bow and shaped stern are extra work beyond a plain strip kayak, so some woodworking experience helps; the designer offers a video on building them. As a rule of thumb, budget 250 to 350 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a 16' 6" Shooting Star actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
