16' 6" Georgian Bay
Designed by Rob Macks
A 16 ft 6 in strip-built sea kayak designed by Rob Macks of Laughing Loon, with kits supplied by Newfound Woodworks. It is 24 in wide, 23 in at the waterline, and about 35 lb. The shallow-arch hull gives high initial stability and easy turning, which suits fishing, photography, marshes and rivers, and newer paddlers, while it still tracks well in open water. There is bulkheaded storage fore and aft under hard hatches.
A full strip kayak with hatches and a large coaming. Builders quoted on the designer's site found the instructions easy to follow. As a rule of thumb, budget 200 to 300 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a 16' 6" Georgian Bay actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
