17' 1" Nipmuc
Designed by Newfound Woodworks
A 17 ft 1 in tandem tripping canoe designed by Newfound Woodworks and formerly sold as the Abenaki 17. Like the shorter Abenaki it follows old Maine canoes, with recurved stems and a flattish bottom for initial stability. About 62 lb in cedar strip, 35.5 in beam, 550 lb capacity. With 1.25 in of rocker it tracks straighter than the Abenaki, which turns more readily.
Plain open-canoe strip construction, the same process as the Abenaki that many first-timers build, with a little more hull to strip and sheathe. As a rule of thumb, budget 160 to 270 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a 17' 1" Nipmuc actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
