17' 2" Navigator
Designed by Hans Friedel
A 17 ft 2 in high-volume sea kayak by Hans Friedel, sold by Newfound Woodworks as a kit only. The hard-chine Greenland-type hull has more V than usual, and tracks strongly in wind. It is 22 in wide and 38 to 44 lb, sized for 175 to 240 lb paddlers with camping gear or up to 290 lb for day trips. Buyers choose an all-plywood stitch and glue kit or a hybrid with a strip deck.
Pre-drilled 4 mm okoume panels with locking joints make the hull quick to assemble; the strip deck adds time and craft. As a rule of thumb, budget 80 to 120 hours for stitch and glue and 130 to 210 for the hybrid. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a 17' 2" Navigator actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
