Core Sound 18

Designed by Salt Boatworks

A smaller and lower-sided version of the Core Sound 21, drawn for inshore and protected water and sized at 18.5 ft so it will fit in most home garages. She keeps the moderate bow flare of the Harkers Island workboats that inspired the bigger boat, has an open interior with an above-deck fuel tank to make life easier for a home builder, and can be set up as a tiller, side console or center console boat.

The beam is 7.5 ft, draft about 6 in at 1,400 lb, and power up to 90 hp for a 25 to 30 mph cruise. She is cold molded: plywood stringers, frames and transom form a jig over which the bottom and sides are cut to fit from thin marine plywood and glassed with epoxy. Salt Boatworks recommends some building or woodworking experience, and sells full-size patterns for the jig or a CNC-cut jig kit with flotation foam and a capacity plate.
