12 ft V Hull Outboard Boat

Designed by Vintage Projects

The boat behind these free plans is the Banta, a 12 ft V-bottom outboard utility boat from an old magazine article that promises easy handling, a nice turn of speed and a weight one person can manage, under 150 lb. The V bottom is the selling point: the article argues it rides rough water far better than the usual flat-bottomed plywood boat.

She is built upside down on a building platform, planked in 1/4 in waterproof resin-bonded fir plywood from two 4 ft by 12 ft sheets, one for the two sides and the other for the two bottom panels and the deck. Side planks go on first, marked directly off the frames, and the bottom planks butt at the keel and lap over the sides. Everything is dry fitted, then assembled with cold resin glue.
