Sagitta

Designed by Richard Woods

A 9.14 m (30 ft) round-bilge performance cruising catamaran by Richard Woods of Woods Designs. Strip plank hulls with plywood decks, or foam sandwich. Beam 5.95 m, about 1.8 tonnes empty, 46.5 sq m of sail, up to 2 m headroom, with daggerboards for racing or low aspect ratio keels for pure cruising and small inboard diesels. Sagittas have raced offshore with success, at least three have crossed the Atlantic, and one sailed from South Africa to New Zealand.

A full bridgedeck cruiser in round-bilge construction is a project for a committed amateur. Woods lists 1,500 hours as a practised builder's minimum for his simpler 8.5 m Gypsy and 2,700 for the Eclipse, so budget 2,500 to 4,000 as a rule of thumb. Real hours from logged builds are below.
