Mia
Designed by Andrew Walters
Mia was the second design Andrew Walters published, a 12 ft runabout with a 5 ft 4 in beam whose lines owe a good deal to William Jackson's 1955 Ace, the boat Sande Boat Works produced from 1956 to 1962. Walters, an architect by trade, modelled her in 3D software, which let him produce dimensioned drawings and templates for every part, seat frames included.
Construction is tape and epoxy over plywood, with the seats, deck and hull panels arranged to lock together into a stiff monocoque. The empty hull comes out around 250 lb. She takes a short shaft outboard; 10 hp will plane her with one aboard, and 25 hp is the size the designer prefers. Plans come with a construction manual, and full-size template drawings of the major parts can be bought as an extra.
What building a Mia actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
