Volare Utility
Designed by Andrew Walters
Volare Utility is the open skiff layout of Andrew Walters' two-piece Volare hull, sold as its own plan set alongside the console version. Both are 15 ft 4 in long and 5 ft wide, built as separate bow and stern sections in tape and epoxy plywood and joined permanently, which keeps the project small enough for a modest shop.
The interesting option here is the step hydroplane supplement. Walters argues that the two-section build makes a stepped bottom almost as easy as a plain one, and his Crouch formula figures suggest a stepped hull on 25 hp would gain about 5 knots, or match a flat hull running 35 hp. He is candid that the stepped version is experimental, and the drawings show optional ventilation ports and short bottom skids for builders willing to test it.
What building a Volare Utility actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
