Chum
Designed by Grandpa's Archive
Chum is an inboard runabout drawn by W. D. Jackson around a marinized Jeep engine, such as the Lehman Econ-o-Power, which the article rates at 60 hp at 3400 rpm. The hull is 15 1/2 ft long with a 6 ft beam and a maximum draft of 20 in, has a convex (hydroconic) bottom, and was expected to run at over 30 mph. The article allowed any light, fast-turning engine of 25 to 100 hp, and offered a single or double cockpit layout.
Planking is 3/8 in plywood over white oak framing, with mahogany plywood decking and fir deck beams and carlines, all built over a temporary form. The scan includes a complete materials list down to screw sizes. A substantial project compared with most of the archive, and a free scan rather than a modern plan set.
What building a Chum actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
