Bartender 22

Designed by George Calkins

The original Bartender. George Calkins, a self-taught Oregon builder who had turned out more than a thousand plywood boats at his Delake shop, worked the design up in the mid 1950s for crossing the dangerous river bars of the Northwest coast, basing it on the local surf dories, and had it fully developed by 1958. The Coast Guard trialled one at Depoe Bay that year, running it through breaking swells on the Siletz bar, then adopted the type for patrol and rescue work, and in 1960 it won the Kiekhaefer National Safe Boating award.

She is 22 ft 7 in long with a 7 ft 10 in beam, a self-bailing deck and room under the cabin for two bunks, a small galley and a portable head. The plans cover either a 70 to 100 hp outboard in a kick-up well or the designer's preferred light inboard of 150 to 250 hp, and the weights and engine position are meant to be kept as drawn for balance. Construction is plywood on simple frames, with lofting or full-size pattern options.
