Sid Skiff
Designed by Ray Speck
A traditional row-and-sail skiff by Ray Speck, who took the lines from a 12 ft 5 in lapstrake skiff owned by Sausalito harbormaster Sid Foster and developed versions from about 13 to 18 ft with one to three rowing stations. A 16 footer shown at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival has a 4 ft 5 in beam, a 90 sq ft sprit rig and two rowing stations. Small Boats magazine reviewed a 13 ft 6 in version with a 4 ft 9 in beam.
This is solid-timber lapstrake, 3/8 in cedar or mahogany planks fastened over steam-bent oak frames, so it asks for traditional skills. The magazine quotes about 250 hours for Speck himself and 500 to 600 for an amateur. Real hours from logged builds are below.
