Solution
Designed by Grandpa's Archive
Solution is a 16 ft plywood sailing scow, published for sailors who wanted something practical and cheap rather than handsome. It is a scow refined enough to carry a 21 1/2 ft stepped mast and about 140 sq ft of sail.
The plywood bottom runs in one long unbroken curve from the stem block to the transom, and the sides swell to full beam just aft of amidships before flattening back in. The article credits that shape with an easy ride and smooth planing on a reach. Frames are selected fir or spruce and all the hull plywood should be waterproof marine grade fir. Scows like this suit lakes and shallow bays where a flat, light boat with a big rig is at home. The scanned article is free.
What building a Solution actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
