Foldak
Designed by Benjy
A 12 ft folding canoe from Woodenwidget, built on the same principle as the Fliptail dinghy: a central wooden keel assembly, four hinged laminated hoops, two drop-down plywood floors and a PVC cloth skin. It folds to 14 in wide and 6 in high for a roof rack, opens in about a minute, weighs from 20 kg and carries two adults or 150 kg. It is drawn for either a single paddle or a double kayak paddle.
The designer says no boatbuilding experience is needed, only basic woodworking and tools such as a jigsaw and plane. Waiting a day for each laminated hoop to cure is the slow part. No hours are published; budget 40 to 80. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Foldak actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
