Classic 17
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 17 ft 2 in compact outboard cruiser by Jacques Mertens of Bateau, on a hull derived from the Classic 19: generous volume, high freeboard and a well-protected bow. Deadrise goes from 45 degrees at the cutwater to 11 at the transom for a smooth ride without excessive roll at rest. Beam is 7 ft, hull weight about 650 lb, design power 50 hp.
Plywood cored epoxy and fiberglass composite, stitch and glue, set up upside down on a simple jig that uses the hull's own frames as molds. The designer says it can be a first project, though prior experience saves time and material. The designer's figure is 80 hours for the hull and 200 or more for a finished boat. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Classic 17 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
