Open Classic 17
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 17 ft 2 in open-cockpit outboard boat by Jacques Mertens for Bateau / Boat Builder Central, plan OC17. It is the open version of the Classic 17 compact cruiser and shares its hull: generous freeboard, a well-protected bow and deadrise that runs from 45 degrees at the cutwater to 11 at the transom. Hull weight is about 650 lb and 50 hp is recommended.
A plywood-cored epoxy and glass composite built stitch and glue, with every part dimensioned and no scarfing. The designer says it can be a first project, though experience with the method saves time, and gives 80 hours for the hull and 200 or more finished. Budget 250 to 450. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Open Classic 17 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
