Classic 21
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 21 ft offshore center console by Jacques Mertens of Bateau, the largest of the Classic series, using the same moderate 12 degree vee that balances a soft ride in rough water against stability at low speed. Beam is 8 ft 6 in, hull weight about 1,300 lb, fuel 80 gallons, and power is 90 hp with a 125 hp maximum. Plans include a dual console layout.
Epoxy, fiberglass and plywood composite built stitch and glue on a jig, with parts nested on standard plywood sheets. The designer says it can be a first project, though experience with the method saves time and material. The designer's figure is 100 hours for the hull and 200 to 400 or more for a finished boat.
