General Purpose 21
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 21 ft wide garvey-type planing hull by Jacques Mertens of Bateau, based on a proven workboat shape and sold as a base hull plus separate plan sets for center console, bass, deck, tour and work boat versions. Beam is 8 ft, design displacement 3,500 lb, fuel 50 gallons, and recommended power is 90 to 150 hp.
Epoxy, fiberglass and plywood composite: MDF molds on strongbacks are planked with plywood stitch and glue style, glassed outside, turned over and glassed inside. The designer recommends a small boat first. The designer's figure is about 100 hours for an experienced builder to get the base hull ready to fair and paint, and twice that for a first-timer, before layout and rigging.
