Fast Skiff 17

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A 17 ft seagoing skiff by Jacques Mertens of Bateau in the style of the Simmons Sea Skiff, begun from a sketch by forum member Chris Harris. It was meant to be economical, simple and easy to customize. Beam is 7 ft, the basic hull weighs about 315 lb, draft is 7 in, and recommended power is 25 to 50 hp.

Stitch and glue composite: frames and stringers are set on a jig of two 2x6s, planked, glassed outside, flipped and glassed inside. The designer says a first-timer could build it, though epoxy and fiberglass experience saves labor. No build time is published; going by the 70 hour hull figure for the larger FS19, budget 150 to 300 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
