Jon Boat / Garvey 12
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 12 ft flat-bottom garvey by Jacques Mertens, sold by Bateau / Boat Builder Central as the GF12 and equally at home as a jon boat or duck boat. Beam is 5 ft, hull weight about 115 lb and draft 6 in, with 10 hp recommended. It is quick with a small outboard and very stable. Sister designs run to 14 ft and 16 ft.
Stitch and glue, with the bottom a plywood-cored glass sandwich. Most cuts are straight lines, and the designer says a first-time builder can do it. His figure is 20 hours for the hull and 40 or more finished; a first build more often takes 60 to 120. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Jon Boat / Garvey 12 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
