Orca 21

Designed by Evan Gatehouse

A 20 ft 9 1/2 in double or triple expedition sea kayak designed by Evan Gatehouse for Bateau / Boat Builder Central, plan SK21. Built to carry a large load on long trips, it has the peaked foredeck of the Orca 17, a moderately high bow and a shallow vee hull with good initial stability. Beam is 30 in and the bare hull weighs about 61 lb.

Stitch and glue in thin 4 mm plywood with light glass. Not difficult, but recommended for builders with one stitch and glue project behind them. The designer's estimate is 40 hours; a more typical budget is 90 to 150. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
