Reliance Tandem
Designed by Steve Killing
The only double in Steve Killing's set of Bear Mountain strip kayaks, the Reliance is 20 ft 8 in long with a 28.5 in beam and a 31 by 17 in cockpit. Bear Mountain describes her as calm and unhurried even at top speed, which is what that much waterline length buys, and the generous beam gives room for cargo and stability for paddling in poor weather. Moderate flare above the waterline adds stiffness as she heels.
Two watertight compartments, reached only through deck hatches, give enough buoyancy to keep her afloat after a capsize. Expected weight is 50 to 60 pounds, reasonable for a boat this long, and design displacement is 510 pounds. She is a big strip building project, with a long strongback and a lot of deck to plank, best suited to a couple who want to tour together in one boat.
What building a Reliance Tandem actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
